A similar thing happens to me as well, I have noticed that I always flare during my luteal phase. Days 24-26 of my cycle are the worst, I normally end up in the hospital. I’ve brought this up to my rheumatologist but we can’t seem to figure out which hormones are causing it. Looooots of rest, hydrating, and painkillers get me through. I’ll update this comment if I ever get any medical insight!!!

Definitely my biggest trigger. I'm in Perimenopause now and now it's even worse😕 Lots of rest, pain relievers and warm showers/baths helps. Sending hugs!

I always drink a ton of herbal tea to try and help, I’ve tried taking the pill but it actually makes my lupus symptoms like ten times when I’m on it. I’ve been on several different pills for birth control and for some reason every single one my lupus symptoms have gotten worse while on them, I’m so frustrated I don’t know what to do at this point. And my rheumatologist is, in the nicest way possible, a man. So when I bring these concerns to him he fully does not understand why it’s a problem, I think he is unfortunately a doctor who just thinks women are dramatic. I’ve been trying to find a new one, but there aren’t a ton that take my insurance and my GP God bless her is doing her best but she’s not a rheumatologist so there is only so much she can do.

You are absolutely not alone in this! Hormonal changes — including those tied to your menstrual cycle — are one of the most well-known lupus flare triggers. Many MyLupusTeam members have shared the same experience, with one noting "I flare every month with my cycle!" and another saying it's most intense the week before their period starts.

The fluctuation in estrogen and progesterone during your cycle can provoke your immune system, which is already overactive with lupus. Here are some things that may help manage period-related flares:

- Track your cycle — Keeping a symptom diary helps you anticipate flares and act early
- Talk to your rheumatologist — They may adjust your medication around your cycle
- Manage stress — Emotional stress around your period can compound flare risk
- Rest proactively — Prioritizing sleep and reducing activity before your period may help
- Avoid other known triggers — Sun exposure, certain foods, and exhaustion can stack on top of hormonal triggers

The most important step is bringing this pattern up with your doctor. Since you've noticed a clear connection, they may have specific treatment strategies to help reduce the frequency or severity of these flares.
