Members rallied around a post asking about lupus and thyroid health, offering comfort and shared experiences as one member awaited biopsy results and later learned she would need thyroid surgery. Several members shared their own thyroid journeys, including living with hypothyroidism since childhood, recovering from Grave's Disease with radioactive iodine treatment, and waiting on their own uncertain biopsy results. A recurring theme was the strong connection between lupus and autoimmune thyroid conditions, wrapped in heartfelt encouragement and prayers for good outcomes.

Most thyroid nodules are benign, Tammy, and I hope yours is, too. We are more prone to autoimmune thyroid disease, including Hashimoto's and Graves', but I'm not aware that we're more prone to nodules or thyroid cancer. Thyroid nodules are pretty common even among healthy people. Keep us posted, please.😘

Yes, lupus does have a notable connection to thyroid conditions. People with lupus are significantly more likely to develop thyroid issues compared to the general population.

Here's what the research shows:

- 15–19% of people with lupus develop hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), compared to about 5% of the general population
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is also more common in people with lupus, though less so than hypothyroidism
- Lupus causes the immune system to produce autoantibodies, and some of these can target thyroid tissue The connection has actually been studied for over 50 years. It seems that some of the underlying immune system factors in lupus overlap with those that affect the thyroid.

It's really smart to stay on top of thyroid health when living with lupus. Many doctors recommend routine thyroid checkups as part of ongoing lupus management. Once your results come in, your doctor can guide next steps. Wishing you all the best on Tuesday! 🤞
