I really swell up when traveling by plane. We let the airlines know we will need assistance and that at least gets us wheelchair assistance between gates, to the luggage area, and priority boarding. I definitely try to hydrate, pack healthy snacks, and I avoid any salty snacks when traveling.

I prepare my body for travel with rest starting a few days beforehand. Flying doesn't bother me as much as getting through airports. During our last few flights, my husband got a wheelchair to make it easier for me. It makes a remarkable difference. I suggest you make sure to wear compression socks and comfortable shoes.

Flying with lupus can be a mixed experience, and it's worth knowing a few things before you head to the airport. Here are some common considerations for lupus warriors taking to the skies:

Potential challenges:
- Fatigue from travel and disrupted routines can trigger flares
- Sun exposure through airplane windows can be a concern (UV rays still penetrate at altitude!)
- Cabin pressure and dehydration may worsen joint pain or swelling
- Stress of travel can impact the immune system

Tips to help:
- Stay well hydrated before and during the flight
- Request an aisle seat for easier movement
- Pack medications in carry-on luggage
- Use SPF protection even on the plane
- Wear compression socks to support circulation
- Plan rest time after arriving at your destination

It's always a good idea to check in with your doctor before traveling, especially if you're mid-flare or recently adjusted medications. They can help you prepare and may have additional recommendations specific to your situation.

Safe and smooth travels! ✈️
