Those dark, purple, or black circles around the eyes are something many people with lupus deal with, and there are a few possible reasons why they show up.
Lupus itself can affect the skin around the eyes, causing discoloration and puffiness. A MyLupusTeam member described it perfectly: "Mine look like puffy, blue, purple bags." Another said, "Sometimes my eyes look bruised."
Here are some common lupus-related causes:
- Inflammation – Lupus can cause swelling and discoloration around the eyes, sometimes as one of the first visible symptoms
- Photosensitivity – Sun or UV light exposure can trigger skin changes around the eyes
- Discoid lupus – Can cause discolored, scaly patches near the eyes that may scar if untreated
- Fatigue – Poor sleep or lupus-related exhaustion can make circles darker and more visible
- Medications – NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) and corticosteroids (like prednisone) can cause fluid retention and bruising, contributing to under-eye discoloration Since scarring around the eyes can be permanent, it's really worth bringing this up with a doctor or dermatologist sooner rather than later. Getting the right lupus treatment can help reduce or even resolve the discoloration.

I always have dark circles under my eyes. Sadly not much helps them because makeup is out for me due to allergies and other autoimmune issues.
