I have Lupus, sisters, cousins and aunt with RA, a brother who has Ankylosing Spondylitis on my mother's side of my family, on my father's side my uncle has MS and cousins with RA... Is it "normal" for there to be clusters of autoimmune diseases like this?
They say it isn't hereditary but...1 sister has FM, 1 had MS and my father had MG. There has got to be a link.
It's not directly hereditary in that they can predict, "oh, you have a 50/50 or 25/75 chance" the way they can with cystic fibrosis, but autoimmune does tend to "run" in families. I have two aunts and several cousins with different autoimmune issues.
Interesting how so many doctors believe differently. All of the Rheumatologists I have seen have commented that while a genetic link isn't proven yet, a hereditary link to increase your risk is highly suspected.
Although lupus is said to be not genetically passed on, having autoimmune diseases increases your chance of having one... me and my sister both have lupus.. which my doctor found weirdly amusing, rare case he said...
I have several family members with autoimmune diseases. My grandfather had scleraderma and RA, my sister has scleraderma, my niece has ankylosing spondylitis, my aunt has polymyositis, RA and questionable lupus diagnosis. Etc, etc... It seems to run all through our family.
How do I explain my burnouts to my friends who don't understand the issues with autoimmune diseases?
