What are other people's experiences on getting pregnant/being pregnant with lupus nephritis? I would like to be off all kidney meds completely. I will still take plaquenil for flares, but I don't feel comfortable taking Imuran. Thoughts??
Please don't stop your meds when pregnant without carefully consulting with your doctor--both lupus and obstetrician, ESPECIALLY if you have lupus nephritis. Nephritis can flare when we're pregnant, which can make us very sick and cause the baby problems too.
Plaquenil is considered by the leading experts to be THE BEST DRUG for lupus, as it prevents organ flares and it's usually really well tolerated. Steroids have been used for decades in pregnant women and are a form of what our bodies naturally produce--cortisol. Asthmatic pregnant women, for example, sometimes need high doses and do fine with pregnancy. We want to avoid steroids when possible, of course, but let's not risk our organs out of fear of meds.
As a doctor with lupus for 37 years, I can relate as a patient and see both sides. It's true some meds have had to be taken off the market, but those are usually brand new ones that haven't been out for long. AVOID BRAND NEW meds if possible.
Meds not mess sorry autocorrect
Its risky not being on any meds as the pregnancy can trigger a flare, i stopped taking all meds and ended up losing the baby. talk to your doctor and hear what they advise
do not take mycophenolate while pregnant. I stopped my meds and I had the worst bone pain while pregnant, like it was a pain that couldn't be rubbed away, it was pain coming from inside. I had to go to the hospital multiple times for a pain shot.
Hi there! I do not have Lupus Nephritis, so I am unable to speak to that portion. I became pregnant while having Lupus SLE. I was already taking a moderate dose of plaquenil, but after my 6th month, I was placed on the highest dose in interest of controlling the Lupus flares while pregnant. I developed Pnuemonia around my 7th month so, I was given a pregnancy friendly dose to control the infection and not affect the baby. Ive since had prednisone added permenantly. I was advised the blood vessels to the baby were restricted and I did not have much fluid around her, so it was decided to end the pregnancy and deliver her once her lungs developed fully at 8 months. Although a little jaundiced, I delivered a very healthy, almost 7lb, Baby girl, who is now 16. I will not lie and say it wasnt a struggle, but we made it, with my doctors care and adhearing to my Lupus cocktail. I hope my story helps.
