Are we (as lupus) at any increased risk for a more"severe" form of the cold or flu? I know anytime we get sick, it can trigger a flare. But, if we were to catch a cold, just because we have lupus, does it mean we'll, automatically get stuck
sick with a more SEVERE cold then the average person??
I can only speak for myself... but I seem to be the first to get sick and the last to get better, i.e, my minor illnesses seem to last longer than others'. They also can definitely trigger flares. I have had less flares as well as less colds/flus since I went on Plaquenil.
We just have to realize that our bodies are different and it can take ALOT to get rid of infections. The best thing you can do is listen to your body and call the doctor when u realize you cannot fight it and need help.
i can say the same thing also only thing i say is that i just get sick like every two weeks but the pain is there every day
i also find it is helpful to do what we need to do to help not catch the colds in the first place. Take vitamins, medicines, eat healthy, drink lots of water.. exercise... all of these things help me to stay healthier. I have allergies... so I find as long as I keep my allergies in check & take those medicines I do not get as sick as often. If my allergies are bad, it leads into allergy induced asthma attacks, respiratory infections, bronchitis or worse pneumonia.. My Lupus attacks my lungs so that is where my issues seem to hit first & it takes FOREVER to get rid of things.. I have learned if over the counter meds are not working & I am eating cough drops like candy its time to go in... Listen to your body is key..
I'm only on plaquenil, so my immune system isn't suppressed. But I just wondered, if our immune systems are technically already "overactive" (in a dysfunctional way) so to speak, it made me wonder what happens when we get the average cold or flu?? If our immune system REALLY kicks in to high gear and the normal cold is more like a super bug on our bodies? Haha Just thinking out loud ;-)
