I also had to have neck and lower back surgery to repair degeneration. After that, I now deal with arthritis. Plus the surgery did not stop scoliosis. No idea whether Lupus caused it or not.

I do have severe arthritis and degenerative disc disease throughout my spine. Not sure if Lupus had anything to do with it or not.

Good morning! ABSOLUTELY!!! Since i was young, around 15-16 or so, ive always experienced back pain. It never felt like it was in the muscle, but it felt like burning deep inside. Despite being a larger, I have always ben athletic. so we all chalked it up to the weight. Years later as I experienced more symptoms, knees, hands, wrists ankles, hips, and so forth...all the pieces fell in place like a gigantic puzzle. I was diagnosed in 2002 and was told the onset sounded like it may have started at the age of 16. So far, Ive had Bi-lateral hip replacement, the right hip has been replaced 3 times. I more recently have had Spinal fusion of L3 thru 7 and now schedule to have left knee replacement as it has been bone on bone for a while now, and possibly the right knee as well. It is also bone on bone, but less damage than the left. I shared all of this because my Rheumy says the same, that Lupus does not effect degenerative bones and or joints. I say I beg to differ. I dont have many issues with my organs, but I do have an abnormal amount of injuries to the bones and joints in my body. Generally bones that I use regularly such as knees, elbow, wrists, shoulder, Spine. I ve been told it was unexplained early arthritis and degeneration starting in my late 20, early 30's. I always look at my Rheumy like, please add 2 and 2!!!!!

Before moving to Georgia, I was seeing a very good rheumatologist in Pittsburgh for the past 10 years whose specialty was lupus. In simple words she said “ lupus can affect every organ in the body, including the spine”. She had other patients besides me that developed degenerative disc disease.
