I'm in my first major flare and have the malar rash for the first time. I can't seem to spend more than 10 minutes outside without my face burning and have hot flashes, even when my fingers are frozen. I feel like the best way to explain this to people is that i feel like a vampire that burns in the sunlight!

I live in Florida and avoiding the sun is very difficult. You have to wear a very good sunscreen. They even have clothes now that have protection from UV lights. Did you know that even fluorescent bulbs can cause a flare? I try to stay out of direct sun and just have indirect light but as a result, I have to take high doses of Vitamin D.

I'm sorry that you have to experience this. I have the same thing. I'm lucky if I make 10 minutes before starting to burn and I haven't yet found anything that helps with the malar rash except Plaquenil and Benlysta treatments. Get used to sunscreen in everything and hats...and even clothing with sunscreen.

The sun and uv rays are a lupies enemy. Make sure to use a good broad spectrum sunblock. And avoid direct sun and UV lighting as much as possible. Photosensitivity is a major contributor to lupus flares.

yes. even when im not in a major flare, I have to wear sunblock and a hat. in the summer I try to stay in the shade if I can. the older ive gotten the more sensitive my skin has gotten, not sure if other people have had the same progression with age or not.
