I've noticed quite a few of us have tattoos! I have 3, but my most recent one (I got just before symptoms started) tends to have some issues. If I get stressed or have sun exposure, and sometimes even randomly, the black ink will swell up and get super itchy. It gets really raised and aggravated. I know our immune systems are in hyper drive, so has anyone else experienced anything similar with old or new tattoos?
I have the same problem. My husband is a tattoo artist and he says that this happens to allot of people and it doesn't necessarily have to do with having lupus. He says it's the body trying to reject the ink. His flare in the sun, especially the white ink. Normally it decreases with time and it may just be that if the tattoo is recent the new ink is causing your immune system to go into overdrive to remove the foreign material. Again, over time it should go away. If it starts to weep and or scab, you will need to see a doctor and possibly get it removed. This is very uncommon and probably won't happen. Mine was bad for years and now is much better even with worsening symptoms of lupus..it flares up now every couple of years for an hour or so. Oh, and he says, stay out of the sun..keep them covered.
I have many large tattoos and they swell up often. I never know when, but can feel them as soon as they start to do it. So weird. Glad to know I'm not the only strange person in the worldπ
I read an article regarding tattoos and Lupus and yes, it does affect your tattoo when you have a flare. It seems to me there is nothing that this disease doesn't effect. πππ
I have been wanting to get a new tat, but have been hesitant because my Lupus has gotten worse and now I am on chemo. This information that Jemma posted is really helpful.
I have two tattoos and thankfully I haven't had any issues with any of them !!! @A MyLupusTeam Member
