Does anyone have any dental issues from having lupus? My teeth are very brittle and weak.

Yes. I have Sjogrens in addition to Lupus, and Sjogrens causes dry mouth, which can lead to serious dental problems. I had very brittle teeth as a result of the dry mouth, many of my teeth broke and my mouth was a mess. Certain medications can cause dry mouth, also deplete calcium from your body, or prevent calcium from being absorbed.Talk to your doctor, if your dental problems are because of dry mouth there are medications you can take. With the right medication, and some dental work, my teeth are doing much better.

The problem is that many of the drugs used to treat SLE and accompanying medical conditions cause severe dry mouth, which makes our mouths breeding ground for bacteria. Once teeth begin to break, then that exposes, the corners of other teeth makes them more vulnerable. Also, a lot of us have overlap diseases like Sjogrens which also cause dry mouth. Medications like Pilocarpine help with the production of saliva, so talking to your doctor about treatment for dry mouth is important if you want to keep your teeth and prevent oral infections. I finally went on Pilocarpine and it helps a lot and I haven't had any bad side effects.

I feel so much better that I"m not alone in this. My mouth has been such an embarrassment. Last December after an abscess, I had 6 extractions, several fillings, a crown, and a partial denture. Looks like I will need an implant as well. I thought I just had bad teeth, then the Reumatologist told me this was typical for people with autoimmune diseases, especially those who can't afford to go to the dentist regularly. I found a Dental School in my City and they have done wonderful work, and I got a grant to cover most of the expense since I have no dental insurance. I noticed that my overall health has improved some since I had all of the bad teeth extracted.

Yes! In fact I'm having all remaining upper teeth pulled and denture fitted Tuesday. It's totally ruined my teeth.
