My fingernails are in very poor shape. I have white lines across them, they split continuously. I have heard some people say the white lines had to do with your liver function. I also will have a ridge down the middle of my nail. Would love to hear from you all about your experience with this.

Many sorts of chronic and acute illnesses show up in your nails. Specifically mixed connective tissue disorder and causes the bottom of your nailbeds to be kind of purple in, mixed connective tissue disorder and causes the bottom of your nailbeds to be kind of purple in, and my nails had vertical splits and ridges related to flares or other illness. I have found that the handcream called working hands helps a lot with the peeling and splitting of my nails are. Perhaps it would help you.

Usually when there's one has Muehrcke Lines (white lines) going across your nails it's due to a lack of iron or vitamin C or D as well as low levels of protein in the blood. I got them all the time because i have hypovitaminosis D (vitamin D deficiency). If the lines are running horizontally then it's just Mees Lines some people get them when their nails start to grow it's nothing to worry about just tiny breaks in the nails that move up as the nails grow. Do they grow at the base of your nail (s) then run along the length of your nail(s) to the tip? If so then it's just Lengthwise White Lines and they are harmless some people get lengthwise white lines in birth & some get them due to damaged cells at the base of the nails.

Once i began to take ferrous sulfate & caltrate the lines across my fingernails disappeared i have never heard the liver one before but i did hear that it could be signs of heart issues what i wrote came directly from my nephrologist's mouth you might want to address this with your doctor.

Horizontal ridges or white lines can appear in your nails during episodes of bad health, and this can occur in anyone who is usually healthy. Your body is just using its resources elsewhere while you're sick, because nails really aren't that important. However in reading up on Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, I have learned that something called periungual (means near the nail) telangectasia ( essentially means too many blood vessels) occurs with this condition. The half moon base at the bottom of your nails becomes red or dark, and your nails tend to peel and scale. Mine have done this since I had septic peritonitis and nearly died almost 3 years ago, and my surgeon told me that my hair and nails would fall out because my body was busy trying to keep essential organs functioning, and hair and nails were not important to keeping me alive, so I kept waiting for them to get better. I only learned a few months ago that it is part of my autoimmune disease. I have not found any solution for this, and just have learned to live with it. Wish I had a more promising answer, but at least it is nothing fatal. Hugs and prayers.
