I was diagnosed with lupus last week. I was using the Nuvaring as birth control and to manage ovarian cysts. Advice on birth control options. I want to be informed when I talk to the doc. I have been doing research and it looks like estrogen is a bad idea.

I've been on Nuvaring for over a decade with lupus and no issues, but everyone is different. If you're not experiencing any side effects related to it then I don't know of any clinical reason to not take it just because you have Lupus.

Just a couple days ago I got The Skyla IUD. I used to have the nuevaring but I had to stop due to DVT and multiple pulmonary embolisms. I got it injected in my arm. It was very easy and you're in and out!

I loved Nuvaring, but there's actually a warning in the little booklet that says it can exacerbate Lupus. I learned this after my lupus was exacerbated to the point I got my diagnosis! I now use the Mirena IUD. I love it so much. I don't have periods, can't feel it during sex, don't have to remember to take anything. Haven't had any scares and it's been in for 3 years. I was 20 when I got it placed and hadn't had any children.

I have the Meraina IUD. I haven't had any issues with it. Normally I would never have agreed to an IUD but the gynecologist was extremely experienced in insertion and I was a perfect candidate as I have been married long term and was done having babies. So far it has been in place 4 years and I have not had any issues. I occasionally get a small period but it is hardly anything. My daughter also has the IUD and so far does not have any issues. I had hoped she would not get it as she IUD's have a terrible history. People have become sterile as a result of the old ones years ago. So far she seems fine though
