I've been going through the SSID process now for well over two years. This info was passed on to me...I hope that it will be helpful for us Lupies in Waiting!

"The Compassionate Allowances List"

Several years ago, it became apparent to Social Security officials that the long waiting time for decisions on disability applications was causing particular hardship for people who were seriously ill. Members expressed deep gratitude for information about Social Security's Compassionate Allowances List, which can expedite disability claims to weeks instead of years, with many sharing their own exhausting wait times ranging from one to three years or more. Several members offered practical guidance based on personal experience, including keeping copies of all forms for reference, understanding the difference between SSI and SSDI, knowing that initial denials are common and persistence through appeals is often necessary, and clarifying that railroad retirement benefits may affect Social Security eligibility. A recurring theme was frustration with a system that feels designed to deny help to those who need it most, balanced by gratitude for community support and the hope that sharing knowledge can ease the burden for others navigating the complicated disability application process.

I had to apply for SSD after my open heart surgery. I was lucky that the SS agent that I talk to explained to me that I would be denied three times and then the fourth time would probably get my SSD. He said that they want to see how persistent you are at going after it. True you cannot draw both SSD and SS. Before 66 you receive SSD anD can make $1000.00 per month but not a penny more or they take your entire SSD check for the month. After, 66, it changes to SS, the amount remains the same it just has a different name but you can make as much EARNED INCOME as you want. Other retirement incomes can reduce your SS because they are not earned income. It took me 2 1/2 years to get approved for SSD and I was denied 3 x. Keep copies of all your forms that you complete they are helpful to refer back to for completing future forms as several of the ?? Are repeatitive. They do pay you back pay to when you first applied which is nice. Hope this helps someone.

Thank you, I've been trying for over a year now and they turned me down without even sending me to a doctor. They had some woman from a workforce agency typing in different jobs to see if there was any gainful employment that I was qualified to do. Sometimes having an education and working hard all of your life works against you. I have recently asked MHMR for assistance with the paperwork, because I now get confused and don't quite understand what to do.

Thank you for the info Syndee! I checked out the link and forwarded it to our lupus support group's affiliate Molly's Fund Fighting Lupus. Perhaps they will keep the info on file for lupus patients. Thank you again!

@A MyLupusTeam Member maybe you can start the process over again and use the Compassionate Allowances this time to expedite things. I've been waiting for my hearing date since 11/14 and recently received a note from my Atty that it should be soon. I pray that it's approved🙏🏼.
