I have been on plaquinil for 3 years and it has helped me get on with my life. recently i have suffered from bilateral hearing loss and the with 40% left now the doctors have found an actual diagnosis. i was put on methotrexate because the doctors assumed that it was my lupus. Has anyone had hearing loss problems caused by lupus or plaquinal? any information would be great. xx

I recently last year or so just started with high ringing buzzing in ears sometimes dizzy only been to ear doc once years ago but time to go now it's bad taking plaqnuil since 1998 so 19 yrs 200 mg a day to most of u guys thats a low dose but just got diagnosed with sjogrens 2 yrs ago as a overlap disease. she said sjogrens to me is worse it's all about the head , eyes, ears, mouth , nose think this whole ringing thing is sjogrens not lupus related if was plaqnuil why wait 16 yrs soon as sjogrens was diagnosed it started good luck hon but get checked for overlap disease before u go off plaqnuil but it does say on script package plaqnuil can cause ringing or hearing loss so weird everybody is different good luck hv a blessed nite 🌺🌸

I have read that Lupus does contribute to hearing loss. I have ear problems from time to time due to the lupus. I have been on Plaquenil for 2.5 years

My Rheum. told me that it might cause ringing in the ears, but did not specify hearing loss as a side effect of Plaquenil (this doesn't mean it can't happen). I haven't experience this (again, that doesn't mean much since everyone is different), but I've only been on Plaquenil for a very short time. I was on Methotrexate for a long time and had no side effects regarding my hearing. I hope things work out and go well for you!

Interesting. I have other "Sjogrens-like" issues: very dry eyes (with corneal abrasions -- tried tons of drops, medicines, punctal plugs, etc.) and dry mouth, which my dentist said was causing caries (cavities) for the 1st time in my adult life. Some medications I'm on could cause dry mouth, so the puzzle remains unsolved.

I now wonder, upon reading this, if the severe itching in my ears could be related to this.

I should note the ear problems started BEFORE I started the Plaquenil and are now much less.
