I was diagnosed with discoid lulu in 2010, since then the scarring on my face has spread from a small patch to right across my nose and a second patch on the side of my face. My scalp and badly scared and I have noticible bald patches.
I hear people speak of their lupus flares and wondered if this was most people's experience with lupus. I have never had a day when my lupus wasn't noticible and only seems to get worse and never better.

I would definitely keep taking the plaquenil. It will help by stopping your lupus from flaring in an organ. It does have lots of side effects, but it definitely will help your more than not.
You probably need to go see your rheumatologist and see if he can put you on something else to help the discoid. There are many medications and if one doesn't work, you have to just keep trying others until you find one that works.
Go to lupus.org and read up about discord lupus. They have message boards for discord as well. Maybe you can learn new things about what others take or do to help it.
Not all people who have lupus, suffers with discord.
Hope this helps you!
I have discoid lupus as well and but I was recently diagnosed in January due to having 5 or 6 patches in my head. I’ve Ben putting aloe Vera plant and turmeric on my scalp, hair is growing back. Bumps started coming on my face so I got a turmeric oil, and that went away.
I also have discoid lupus and was diagnosed in late 2019.I started with a bald patch in the back of my head and a sore/rash in my left ear that would not go away and then I developed a red bump on my nose. I’ve had my scalp, ear and nose injected with steroids but the risk of skin atrophy is great. I’ve been taking Hydoxychlorquine for more than 2 years and started on Dapsone which is used for acne for about a year and a half. The bump on my nose has finally gone away but I have what looks like discoloration in the area or scarring. It definitely makes me self conscious about how i look and my rheumatologist told me to use Derma-blend to cover the scar.
I have been going to ups and downs as well
