I've been treated for lupus/uctd for the last 7 months. I'm on Plaquenil and gabapentin for neuropathy. I started with a 1:640 homogenous ANA. I tested negative for DsDNA and all specific antibodies related to Sjogrens, Lupus, etc. So its been a wait and see kind of situation. I don't have classic symptoms of lupus but certainly something autoimmune (or so we thought..), so my rheumy started me on Plaquenil and go from there. I had some blood work done yesterday for the VA and suddenly I am ANA… read more

Peripheral neuropathy is also part of Hashimoto's Disease. What do you mean by it is uncontrolled? Your TSH will be on a roller coaster until your antibodies have finished killing your thyroid. Hashi's should hope for a TSH of around 1-1.5 if you're at the right dose and gradually increase up to a full replacement dose. If the thyroid antibodies are high enough they can do all sorts of things. The Ana can pick up thyroid antibodies, but they usually result in a low postivie ANA not something like 1:640. You're more likely to get lupus if you have hashimoto's disease and you're more likely to get Hashimoto's if you have lupus. Also I don't know very much about the patterns but I think the Homogenous is more typical of Lupus. Although I am a Speckled pattern as far as I can remember. I don't know what pattern I was to start with because that was when I was 13 and I don't remember also they didn't diagnose me at 13 they were just like oh well you almost meet the criteria but you're missing a joint (only my knee was textbook arthritis the rheum got the med students to come look at a textbook knee on me).

Yes, ana test reveals how active your immune system is. The plaquinil supresses the immune system. It's a good thing.

Also another thought. Do you know if you have thyroid nodules? They can also put out thyroid hormone making it difficult to get an ideal dose. I had three the last time they checked.

I too have Hashimoto’s. In the year and a half prior to my lupus diagnosis my thyroid levels ( usually stable) went haywire. Following diagnosis and the introduction of immune suppressants Plaquenil and Cellcept, my thyroid stabilized. Also the last 2 bloodwork I’ve had also seemed fairly normalized. My doc said that it was evidence the medication was doing it’s job.
