Does anyone have an unusual intolerance to heat with their lupus? I’m trying to play tennis but even 75 and sunny is too hot and I get sick from it. Has anyone tried a cooling vest? I’ve seen them on some lupus sites but want to make sure it’s not just a waste of money.

I am so thrilled that you are playing tennis! I stopped about 5 years ago. First had to stop playing during summer due to heat. Then due to body aches, fatigue and injuries. Overall, I chose to save all my energy for work instead of physical recreation. That was a mistake. I hope any of you who still can get out there and have fun with exercise do it! Sending you all warm wishes.

I’ve found cooling didn’t help. Before I knew I had lupus I was infamous for how terribly I’d do in the heat so my dad got a mister and any outdoor outing my family would be spraying me down (keep in mind this was in Utah with no humidity so that method actually could work for most people, but not in humid states). I’ve found shade and sun screen and surprisingly a hat and sunglasses makes way more difference than temperature. Like if it’s90F but very cloudy Id do way better than 78F and very sunny. Cool is still helpful but just not take a game changer

Matthew mentioning heat in kitchen just reminded me that in summer when I cook dinner I get a mild flare every time. Not as bad as the sun light but a nauseated fainting feeling.
Have to go quickly to cool area and hydrate. But that’s me. Needless to say I eat a lot of salads in summer or prepare dinner very early in the morning.🤷🏻‍♀️
This disease just gets more and more complicated.
Blessings to you all.🙏🥰

Excess sun exposure can also cause flares in systemic lupus, triggering symptoms such as joint pain, weakness, and fatigue.

Can you play tennis in the afternoon where the sun is not as strong?
