From my experience with SLE...

Anything that is foreign, new, damaging, etc can and most likely will cause a flare up.

If you are already in a flare things as innocuous as a bug bite or UV from the sun can make your skin look like it had acid poured on it.

I have no idea how my body would react to getting a tattoo.

Based on how it reacts to changing soaps or shampoo or eating out at a less than sterile restaurant I personally wouldn't consider it a good idea.

Tattoos are for a short time prone to infection and infections are really bad for us. Even if it went perfectly well and good, thousands or millions of needle pricks in a relatively small area is bound to cause inflammation and with Lupus there is a chance that inflammation doesn't stay minimal.

If I had to guess I would say it would be less dangerous than getting a staph infection, more dangerous than getting bug bite, and on par with getting a sunburn.

But I'm just guessing

Hello Connor,

Not a great choice knowing you have Lupus and can lead to mischief. Too many negatives ranging from infection, skin or systemic reaction, provocation of a flare. Even being exposed for hours under the light can be problematic. If it’s a gotta have sentimental thing then it’s a risk vs. benefit evaluation only you can do. Choose wisely and hope you are having a good week.

I have one tattoo & never had a reaction, & my 2 daughters( both dx'd with Lupus have MANY tattoos & no adverse reactions so I will consider us very fortunate bc as we all know, each of us has different reactions to many different things.
