Hi, I am new to this board and have a question. I recently started phentermine for weight loss and I started having awful lupus flares. Usually my lupus is under control and very mild. I've also had alot of emotional stress with the death of a good friend this week. I'm trying to figure if it's the stress or the phentermine? Can this medicine cause flare-ups? I would love to hear others experience with phentermine. Thanks!

Thank you for the replies. I did initially have a large energy boost with the phentermine ( and perhaps overdid it at that time). Then about a week and half into taking the medication I started flaring. My lupus has been very mild and this is the first flare I've had since a year and a half ago. I'm on a medrol pack currently and still struggling in this flare. I started to feel a bit better this afternoon, then symptoms came back again. Maybe I will get off the phentermine and see how I feel.

Hi, I took phentermine several years ago. The only thing I noticed was that it gave me so much energy that I had to pace myself or I did flare. Now the stress however, knocks me done for a good week or more.
Take care.

Hey Sharon,

I am not a doctor or a pharmacist...
I have also never taken phentermine...

With that having been said, anything a Lupie takes can set off a flare.
Any substance, whether pharmaceutical or a natural substance, that has the ability to be an allergen, modify immune system, change hormone production or produces any significant change chemically in the body has at least a chance of causing a flare.

Even caffeine, vitamins, and certain herbs.

Stress can also trigger a flare.

For me, a stress induced flare tends to be mild but consistent. A flare induced by a chemical/hormonal change tends to be more severe. That's just my experience.

If it were me... I would journal about the symptoms, when they started, how I feel daily after, if it's worse after medicine, whatever you can think might be good info for the Doctor and then talk with them.

@A MyLupusTeam Member is a wonderful source of information and help around here, maybe she knows about this drug specifically.
