Wanting information please regarding Fosomax & Reclast.
Experience with, side effects etc
I had 1 Prolia self injection and my new Rheumatologist wants me off of that, recommended Reclast.
I’ve heard terrible knee joint pain and soft tissue swelling.
I already have awful knee pain and that worries me.
Fosomax is once a week but restrictions with other meds or supplements on day of dosing, maybe..
Thank you for any experience, advise or suggestions you can share.

The bisphosphonates (Fosamax/Reclast category) definitely have the potential for serious side effects, and I think some doctors (including me) are not convinced that the benefits outweigh the risks. Prolia also carries a lower risk of jaw necrosis and atypical femur fractures, and once it's stopped, a bisphosphonate must be started, or more rapid bone loss occurs with increased fracture risk. Dentists are very fearful of performing extractions and other invasive procedures on people who have been on these meds, so for those of us with dental problems, the risks are greater. Jaw necrosis often requires surgical removal of the affected jaw portion, making eating very difficult.

Weight-bearing exercise, vitamin D, and calcium (preferably in our diet) are safe measures to help preserve our bones. Dr. Loren Fishman of Columbia University has an excellent "yoga for osteoporosis" program on YouTube, which he has found to be as effective as medications.

We must weigh the risks and benefits for ourselves, as it's not clear-cut. I hope this helps somewhat!

@A MyLupusTeam Member I remember that recall too. I never took it but my mom and sister did. Here’s the update

Fosamax Lawsuits
Plaintiffs who filed lawsuits against Merck for its osteoporosis drug Fosamax claim that the drug caused osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) and femur fractures. Allegations against the drug company include failure to warn and manufacturing a defective drug. Merck settled about 1,200 ONJ cases for $27.7 million.

I was hospitalized from reclast. My breathing go bad and was in for several days. Fortunately it wasn't anaphylaxis but it was bad enough to keep me. Fosamax was no problem but my doctor said best thing weight baring exercise and calcium is best if it's not progressed

I don't have experience with Reclast, but my Rheumatologist seems to think it would be good. I have Osteoporosis. I've heard things about that concern me however. I've taken Fosomax and had a bad reaction to it, so can't take it. I hope you find the answers you need. Take care
