My orthopedic doctor has told me my left knee is bone on bone . She has recommended I try synvisc injections as as last option before total knee replacement. I’m reluctant to do anything new wondering how my Lupus will react to it.
Much appreciated! I am scheduled for 3 of them 3 weeks apart. Starting next week
Hi Tracy! I’m sorry that you are having knee issues. I feel your pain! I have had synvisk injections in both knees on multiple occasions.
While the fifty percent success rate scared me, I had already had one injection that provided relief for nearly seven months, so I didn’t hesitate to have another one!!!
My wonderful doctor had to fight my insurance company to get them to pay for it once the negative studies came out. He told me that more than 75% of HIS patients had found relief.
It doesn’t help immediately, but in about a week or so, the relief was wonderful! I went from wearing a bulky brace all of the time to not needing it at all for nearly seven months following the first injection, about 5 mos with the second and third, and about 4 mos for the fourth. I haven’t had one in a few years because I haven’t needed it for some reason.
The injections contain hyaluronic acid (originally from rooster comb, but I don’t know if it’s synthesized now or not). I researched the safety of them (ad nauseum), and found that the possible benefits outweighed the risks for me.
I would not hesitate to get another, should the need arise. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have (if I know the answer!)
I wish you good health and pain-free days!!!
As an internal medicine physician, I understand that the research does not support the benefits of these injections.
As an internal medicine physician, my understanding is that the research indicates no significant effect from this, though some may get relief.
Thank you. She said it only has a 50% chance of working. I am reluctant to do that or the TKR because of my Lupus . It takes me 2x as long as someone who doesn’t have Autoimmune problems to heal from anything.
