The current variants are NOT well covered by the spring booster, which hopefully everyone got, but the booster still helps prevent hospitalization and death. I lost a friend with lupus about a month ago to the new variants. :(
Dr. Robert Hopkins, the medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (part of the National Institutes of Health), and some other experts recommend an additional summer booster for the immunocompromised who haven't had a booster in at least two months… read more
@RetriciaRichardson--That's a great question, Retricia. Developing lupus after the vaccine is very rare, but has been reported. Having COVID stimulates the immune system into overdrive. Several cases of lupus have been reported in those who have had COVID.
Long COVID is believed to be at least in part autoimmune, and the vaccine is proven to help prevent this, too. Also, getting COVID can trigger lupus flares. I'd also talk to your rheumatologist and consider consulting with an infectious disease specialist about this question. They may know of some data that I don't.
@A MyLupusTeam Member any data about people who were diagnosed with Lupus after receiving the Covid vaccine? Is there data showing the vaccine would do anymore harm or good for these people?

I’m sincerely sorry for your loss of a friendship due to Covid 💐. I’m really hearing more people lately are coming down with it. I’m calling my Doctor in the morning. Thank you again for yet another warning. You are keeping me on my toes!
@A MyLupusTeam Member thank you for responding.
I developed symptoms of Lupus after receiving the Covid vaccine and I am inquiring about it with my Rheumatologist. It peaked my interest because of it all. I work with Covid patients in a daily due to my profession, respiratory therapy, and had true Covid once since the virus was known. Developed Lupus two years after I’ve had Covid and about 2 months after receiving my second dose of the vaccine I was diagnosed with SLE.
@Doris7--HCQ is the only lupus med that doesn't suppress our immunity, so if that's all you're taking, you aren't immunocompromised--good news.
The data proves that the vaccine helps prevent hospitalization and death from COVID, Doris. It doesn't prevent the infection, but prevents severe illness from the virus, just as with the flu vaccine.
