Has anyone else had all of their white blood labs come back low? All of my white blood count, neutrophils, etc have come back low. This has been happening for years now. Can anyone tell me why?
Kitkat, eating a healthy diet with plenty of veggies/fruits/beans/lentils, etc., and without processed (packaged) foods, salt, and sugar can support our immunity.
Vitamin D3 is vital for immune function, and our levels should be at least 50, so please ensure yours is, Kitkat. It reduces our autoimmunity and also protects us from infection. Usually, at least 2000 IU daily of D3 is enough to maintain good levels, so please talk to your doctor about this. There's some limited evidence that a daily multivitamin supplement may help reduce infection risk, too.
We should never take echinacea, as it triggers our lupus. Vitamin B12 deficiency becomes more common with age, though this doesn't directly impact our immunity but worsens fatigue and other issues. I hope this helps. Please keep us posted.😘
I should clarify that although steroids can increase our WBCs, they are NOT good for our immunity and suppress it, making us more prone to infection at doses over 7 mg a day or so.
Kitkat, it's true that lupus can attack our white blood cells, and I also have low lymphocytes at times. When my immunosuppressant dose is higher, this normalizes.
Steroids tend to increase our WBC count, but some of our meds can lower our WBC counts. Have you discussed this with your rheum? If the low WBC is in a worrisome range and/or causing you to get more infections, you may want to ask about consulting with a hematologist, too, and consider a second opinion from another rheumatologist.
In lupus, changes in blood cell counts are common and can indicate the disease's progression or additional health issues. Here are some key points:
- Leukopenia: About 50-60% of people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have lower total white blood cell counts (less than 4,000 cells per microliter)
- Neutropenia: Show Full Answer
Niranjana, thank you so very much for that valuable insight! I will definitely ask my doctor about the vitamins and add more veggies and lentils to my diet!
