Last September I was diagnosed with UCTD (mild lupus) and EDS last June (not sure what kind yet, geneticist thinks classical) but just trying to differentiate my flares. Like what’s lupus pain and what’s EDS pain? Any insight is appreciated!

Differentiating between lupus pain and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) pain can be challenging since both conditions share some symptoms. Here are some insights based on my knowledge base:

- Lupus Pain: Often involves joint pain, chronic fatigue, and can include symptoms like skin rashes and organ involvement due to the autoimmune nature of the disease.
- EDS Pain: Typically includes loose joints, delicate skin, and stretchy skin. Pain can also come from hypermobile joint dislocations and chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Maintaining detailed symptom records and communicating with your healthcare team can help in distinguishing between the two.

Laurie, joint swelling and redness are more characteristic of autoimmune inflammation, so that can help you distinguish it from ED. With lupus, we can, of course, get joint pain without swelling, and that would be tricky to differentiate. To my knowledge, any other symptoms that we can get from lupus, like headaches, fevers, rashes, etc., wouldn't be seen with ED.

I hope this helps and sorry you're dealing with both!
