Yes, it is possible for lupus not to show up in blood work but still be present. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because no single test can definitively confirm it. Doctors use a combination of criteria and tests to diagnose lupus, including:

- Medical history
- Physical examination
- Blood tests (e.g., complete blood cell count, antibody tests)
- Imaging (e.g., chest X-ray, echocardiogram)
- Biopsy (e.g., skin or kidney)
- Neurological exams

Lupus is sometimes called "the great imitator" because its symptoms can resemble those of other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

I'm afraid. That is true I have experience with my doctor saying that it wasn't there, changing later they found it. Two doctors saying yes just one said no. It's terrible when that happens. You're not alone. Viola Hines

I was extremely lucky that I had such a knowledgeable and concerning doctor to immediately take my blood for a fast 24-hour result, and then to immediately go to the best Rheumatologist in the area. Within 3 days of 2 blood tests, 1 urine test for my kidney output, and I was put on Prednisone for one week to get down the swelling, salt tablets to get the water out, and Hydroxychloroquine. I felt I had hit the trifecta with getting everything done correctly by 2 major doctors. My heroes!

Thanks for your reply. They haven't stopped my medication. I am now doing shots every three days because my eyes are inflamed badly. My bladder also. I had to turn down bladder surgery for a device in my back because I am on the shots and the hydroxychloroquine. The doctor I see for the Lupus and RA doesn't think that is a good idea while on these medicines. He said it could cause too many complications and that is not a risk I should take unless it's life or death. However, it still not showing in my blood but it's there and it is working me over. I just started breathing better.....I am out of breath when I walk or do too much.
