A visit to my ear, nose and throat doctor said my turbinates are very inflamed. They are bony structures in part of the nasal area. Ah ha, that’s why over 3 cortisteroid nasal sprays, Reactine and lemon, ginger and raw honey in warm water hasn’t been helping with this nuisance symptom.

Nasal congestion and inflammation of the turbinates can be a challenging symptom for people with lupus. It's understandable that you're frustrated with treatments not providing relief. While corticosteroid nasal sprays and antihistamines are common treatments, sometimes they may not be enough when dealing with lupus-related inflammation. You might want to discuss alternative treatment options with your healthcare provider. Some MyLupusTeam members have found relief using sinus rinses daily, which can help keep nasal passages clear. However, it's important to work with your doctor to find the right combination of treatments for your specific situation, as what works for one person may not work for another.

Remember to limit decongestant use to less than seven days to avoid "rebound congestion" which can make symptoms worse. Your doctor might need to adjust your current treatment plan since the previous approaches haven't provided adequate relief.

Hey Westcoast, yes!! I am going insane. I have such bad congestion and a very severe post nasal drip that is practically 24/7.

I have been trying nasal sprays and rinses but nothing helps much. I had to have my turbinates reduced a few years ago and I suspect that they are the problem now as water from the rinses is getting trapped and will suddenly come pouring out my nose hours later.

I did just start a new spray and it has helped a bit. I was actually scrolling to a question I asked recently on this same issue to post what it was and I see that it contains azelastine which was what other suffers were recommending to me.

My spray is Dymista Allergy is a combination nasal spray used to treat moderate to severe allergic rhinitis, also known as hayfever.

It contains azelastine hydrochloride, an antihistamine, and fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid. These ingredients work together to relieve symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose, and blocked nose.

The other thing I have found helpful is massaging quite hard under my eyes down towards my nose right over where the sinuses are and starting at the base of my ear dragging my finger firmly down to just under my jaw bone. This makes it easier to clear the congestion.

Sorry this is happening to you. I am really struggling with it.

Oh WestcoastHoneyB! That is rough. I am also on allergy shots Xolair - they help my skin from itching but do diddly squat for my sinuses.

I also have my deviated septum fixed and at the same time my turbinates reduced but apparently those things do grow back.

I do get a lot of liquid in my ears now that I never used to and constantly have ringing but apart from the irritation of having to swallow so much my throat is okay.

I do get a lot of sores in my nose and blisters in my mouth but it’s interesting to hear you say a deviated septum is also a common symptom.

I agree, I never wake up knowing which symptoms I will have to deal with that day and they can vary so wildly I really don’t blame people for not understanding or even thinking we might be exaggerating.

I am slowly training myself to care less and less about what other people think.

Pray you get some relief soon xx

Hi there LaraWalters,
It seems we’ve got similar issues with the stupidest nasal problem going on pretty well 24/7 as you mentioned. My other doctor which is an allergist who I’ve been getting allergy shots from him already for 2 years with the shots not working at all. The doc prescribed me a nasal spray which is not a cortosteroid spray. It cleared the nose blockage at first then not. Its name is Ipravent and was prescribed by him and I’ve got a visit with him in next month in June to let him know about it. Back around the early 2000’s I had deviated septum surgery done and this seemed to fix my nasal stuffiness but I didn’t know that I even had lupus back then . I read online that a deviated septum is one of the problems for people with SLE. So I guess my body wanted to find another way to screw around with my nasal area and it decided to be a big bully and mess around with my turbinates. Another thing is my ear, nose and throat are 90% of the time plugged being dose & throat congested and my ears are blocked up in which probably ate filled with mucus in the eustachian tubes. There’s also some fluttering going on in the opening of my left ear, tip of the ear and close below to my temple as if a work or other fly or insect slithering around there. This seems to happen on a random basis….i guess like the disease itself as a whole is disgustingly random. I’m seeing my family doctor this week and let her know about this because it may be a neurological ordeal to deal with. Text to you soon.
