My sinuses are congested. The hearing in my right ear is blocked and I cannot hear out of my hearing aid. My rheumatologist only recommended the OTC meds I am already using. Does anyone have any natural remedies for unclogging an ear during a cold?

Members rallied around a question about natural remedies for ear blockage from a cold with sinus congestion, sharing a wide range of tips including essential oils, castor oil behind the ear, Vicks VapoRub on a Q-tip just inside the ear, hydrogen peroxide drops, and steam inhalation over hot water. Several members also mentioned nasal sprays like Flonase and Nasacort for reducing inflammation, along with sinus rinses and warm compresses. The original poster provided a happy update, sharing that a visit to her PCP and then an ENT resolved the issue, as significant earwax buildup combined with inflammation had been the cause all along.

Had what I felt was my worst cold ever in my 67 years of life on May 15. Turned into full blown aggressive sinus infection. (My first ever.) Let 6 days go by of misery. Day 7 went to urgent care and had to convince the NP that this was not an issue that would resolve on its own. Got antibiotic Rx and it took 5 days of meds to finally get better. Advocate for yourself when you know an issue is not run of the mill. Mind you, even as an MD I got push back.

@A MyLupusTeam Member and @MyLupusTeam It's a combo of earwax lodged in and a little bit of inflammation. The ear irrigation was too uncomfortable, so she recommended ear drops. She wants me to see an ENT if the ear drops don't work. The doctor also gave me a prescription for generic Xyzal for my sinus issues. Thanks so much for asking.💜

Bucket of very hot water, tspn of Vicks, towel over head, inhale . It will loosen up the crud and clear you up. Just don’t burn yourself 😱. Old fashioned, but it works. Hope you feel better😔 a hot pack over the ear may also help. Vicks is an incredibly useful product.
