The symptoms you're describing could be related to costochondritis, which is inflammation of the joints connecting your ribs to your breastbone. This condition is common in people with lupus and typically causes pain that:
- Develops in your ribs (front or back)
- Increases with movement
- Worsens with pressure
- Can travel to shoulders or arms
- Is often more severe on the left side For managing this type of pain, several approaches may help:
- Using over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen
- Applying heat therapy (heating pad or warm towel)
- Wearing loose-fitting clothing
- Getting adequate rest
- Working with a physical therapist who respects your pain limits

It's important to find a physical therapist who understands lupus and will modify exercises based on your comfort level, rather than pushing through pain. Given your symptoms, you should consider asking your doctor about getting imaging done of your ribs. If you experience severe pain or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention, as these could indicate more serious complications that need evaluation.
