Leg cramps (or spasms) are painful, involuntary muscle contractions that can affect your thighs or calves at any time, including during sleep. Many MyLupusTeam members report experiencing "jump-out-of-bed-and-stretch cramps" in the middle of the night, particularly during lupus flare-ups. Here are some ways to manage nighttime leg cramps:

• Gentle stretching - try placing toes on the edge of a step and lightly lowering your heel
• Apply heat therapy using a heating pad or warm damp towel
• Avoid overstretching as this could worsen the cramp
• Talk to your rheumatologist to determine the underlying cause and develop a treatment plan specific to your situation

If cramps persist for hours or become severe, seek medical attention as some members have needed emergency care for prolonged cramping episodes.

Some older adults experience this condition, and it's considered "idiopathic," meaning no one knows why! Make sure your magnesium level has been checked, too, Tammy, as low magnesium can also cause leg cramps.
