Question: What should I know about a rash with red dots appearing on my calf muscle?
Rashes can be a common symptom of lupus and may appear anywhere on the body. If you're experiencing a rash on your calf muscle, it's important to have it evaluated by your healthcare provider, particularly your rheumatologist or dermatologist, as different types of lupus rashes require different treatments. There are several types of lupus-related rashes:
• Acute cutaneous rashes - These appear during flares and can affect any area of the body
• Subacute cutaneous rashes - Usually appear on sun-exposed areas and form circular patterns
• Chronic cutaneous (discoid) rashes - These are typically thick, scaly, and disc-shaped
Since muscle pain can also accompany lupus rashes, it's especially important to discuss any combination of symptoms with your healthcare team to ensure proper treatment and prevent potential complications.
