@A MyLupusTeam Member For many years my doctors thought I was doing just fine with CellCept and Prednisone. Their opinions were "let's not rock the boat". When my nephrologist referred me to her partner who is also a lupus nephritis researcher, that changed everything. He knew my rheumatologist personally and wrote him a letter to convince him that Benlysta would benefit me. Now I am now completely off Prednisone and was told that lupus is in a clinical remission.

I was persistent to make it happen. I brought Benlysta up countless times at appointments. As far as immunity, I haven't had any infections or viruses in the near two years that I have been doing the injection. Since we all experience lupus and medications differently, it could be another story for you. Do you get infections or viruses easily that don't heal right? If so, maybe that is your doctor's concern. I hope my answer helps in some way.πŸ’œ

@A MyLupusTeam Member I was trying to find an article that explains the difference between immunosuppressants like CellCept and biologic meds like Benlysta. All I could find was one with a clear explanation about how biologics work. I will post one to you about immunosuppressants in the next comment space.

@A MyLupusTeam Member, I turned 70 in June and I have been on Benlysta infusion for 2 years, my rheumatologist recomended it when I had to stop my plaquenil for eye macular degeneration. As with @A MyLupusTeam Member, it has worked really well for me, as she said your doctor might have concerns for infections. Hope you have a restful weekend. πŸ’œ

Question: Has anyone else had their doctor refuse to prescribe Benlysta due to concerns about lowered immunity and infection risk?

While Benlysta (belimumab) is FDA-approved specifically for treating SLE and lupus nephritis, your doctor's concerns about infection risk are valid. As a biologic medication, it can affect your immune system's ability to fight infections. It's important to have an open discussion with your doctor about their specific concerns. Some key points to discuss include:

β€’ Your current lupus symptoms and severity
β€’ Your overall health status
β€’ Your personal infection risk factors
β€’ Alternative treatment options that might be more suitable for your situation

Remember that treatment decisions should always be individualized based on your specific health circumstances. If you'd like a second opinion, consider consulting with another rheumatologist to discuss your treatment options.
