Heart fluttering and breathing difficulties are common experiences with lupus. About 50% of people with SLE experience heart-related symptoms, including palpitations and inflammation in different parts of the heart. Many MyLupusTeam members report similar experiences during flares.

Some members find relief through deep breathing exercises and changing positions. If you're experiencing these symptoms, it's important to discuss them with your doctor, especially if they occur during flares or seem related to your medications. These symptoms could be related to several lupus-associated conditions affecting the heart and lungs. Common issues include:

• Pericarditis (inflammation of the sac around the heart)
• Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle)
• Pleurisy (inflammation of lung tissue)
• Pleural effusion (fluid buildup around lungs)

It's crucial to maintain your prescribed treatment plan and communicate any new or worsening symptoms to your healthcare team. If you experience severe chest pain, shortness of breath, or concerning heart symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Yes I have these moments that feel as though no matter how I breathe I just can't get enough air then I start focusing on my breathing pattern then almost pass out.

I'm sorry this happens to you too. I also focus on my breathing which probably triggers my anxiety even more, and in turn makes everything one hundred times worse.

Jessica, hello. I was at a cardiologist's appointment. I was diagnosed with lupus in October 2024. Since then, I have had heart problems. I have chronic anemia. Hemoglobin is now 70 mg / l. I raise it with IVs of the drug "Ferinject". My heart suddenly begins to hurt. The pain is sharp, squeezing. It gives to the left shoulder, armpit. In the lying position, shortness of breath begins. It is difficult for me to breathe. In such cases, I take nitroglycerin, sometimes 3 tablets, Magnerot, Kudesan. There is no confirmed diagnosis of angina.

It can be tough to find answers. You could read about coronary vasospasm, coronary endothelial dysfunction, microvascular angina to see if any sound familiar. I was diagnosed last year via provocative angiogram with LAD Vasospasm. The Left Anterior Descending Artery brings blood to the Left Ventricle-the heart’s pump. When it spasms I get angina and feelings of hypoxia.
