Q: Can teeth pain trigger or be related to lupus flares?

Dental issues and lupus have a complex relationship. People with lupus often experience oral health problems, with tooth decay affecting nearly 100% of those with active lupus. The condition can cause:

• Dry mouth (xerostomia)
• Mouth sores/ulcers (affects about 40% of lupus patients)
• Periodontal (gum) disease
• Swollen and painful gums
• Increased tooth sensitivity Several lupus-related factors can contribute to dental problems:

• Medications like methotrexate can cause mouth sores and increase infection risk
• Decreased saliva production can raise acid levels in the mouth
• Higher risk of periodontal disease
• TMJ disorders from teeth grinding
• Increased risk of infections due to immunosuppressant medications

If experiencing dental pain, it's important to work with both your rheumatologist and dentist to develop an appropriate treatment plan that takes your lupus into account.

You should see a dentist and ask if they have had other SLE patients explaining that they have had teeth pain.
I had had major problems with my teeth over the years with SLE. My teeth started to crack and break and I have had to replace all but 3 teeth with crowns. I would also always get infections as well. Last summer I had an abscess without any pain I woke up one day with a lump on the roof of my mouth. We must all have regular dental exams, x-rays, teeth cleaning. If you are having a tooth pulled or any other work your doctor may order antibiotics to take a day before your surgery to prevent infections.

I never really had teeth or mouth pain and difficulty before my Lupus rolled in. But since it has gum sensitivity has definitely been quiet a new feature for me. Its not based on hot and cold sensitivity to greatly like usual it's more of a pressure and touch sensitivity. I'm a side sleeper so when I sleep on the right side of my mouth *usual sensitivity place especially around my front teeth* it can be quite uncomfortable depending on the pain it makes me toss and turn. I also think I'm criminally guilty of grinding my teeth in my sleep so I'm sure that also helps keep my gums tender too. But I find using gum sensitivity toothpaste also a bit helpful and soothing especially when Im looking for a bit of instant relief.
