There are some mornings 🌞 I wake up and sit up on the side of the bed trying to get myself together, but my body just feels so heavy...like all of a sudden I'm made of 10 tons of steel πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«. What is that heavy feeling? Fatigue and exhaustion 😫? πŸ€”

For clarification, this isn't a feeling of dizziness. It feels like… read more

I find staying in bed for a little while to give my body the chance to fully wake up helps, TaKeisha. I feel that heaviness if I try to get up too quickly.

The more rest I get the heavier I feel when I arise. Its a daily battle of balance. I do a body check before moving. Taking a slow approach to beginning your day is paramount.

I also have to sit on the edge of the bed before standing. It’s only for a short time, but it prevents dizziness and a possible fall. The human body is so complicated! There is no β€œone size fits all.” We learn about ourselves each day and some of it we don’t want to learn!πŸ˜‚

That heavy feeling you're experiencing is a common symptom among people with lupus. Morning stiffness and heaviness affects nearly 95% of people with lupus, particularly impacting joints and muscles. This sensation often feels worse when you first wake up and try to move, which explains why lying back down provides temporary relief. The feeling could also be related to blood pressure changes when you change positions. Some people with lupus experience orthostatic hypotension - a sudden drop in blood pressure when changing positions - which can cause dizziness and that heavy sensation. This is particularly common in people who take certain medications for lupus.

It's important to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider, as they can help determine if medication adjustments or additional support strategies might be helpful for managing these morning symptoms.
