What causes itching with lupus and how can it be managed?

Itching in lupus is often caused by skin inflammation and can be particularly bothersome during flares. Common triggers include:

• Humid weather
• Exercise
• Tight or elastic clothing
• UV light exposure
• Hard water
• Certain laundry detergents Here are some helpful ways to manage itching:

• Wear breathable natural fabrics like cotton and silk
• Use fragrance-free detergents and skip fabric softeners
• Consider installing UV-blocking window shades
• Try loose-fitting clothing instead of elastic bands
• Use sun protection when outdoors
• Ask your healthcare provider about medicated creams or powders

If you develop a rash with the itching, your doctor may recommend a skin biopsy to determine the exact cause and best treatment approach.

Oh my gosh yes! Me too. Sun sensitivity has gotten so bad over the past year! I wear long sleeves everyday now. Sunscreen does nothing for me. The random itch attacks are awful! I feel like scratching my skin off! (Relief is impossible). I did find that ice helps though.

Michelle, I have had random, intermittent rashes for years. I was diagnosed with SLE in 2023 and still have generalized itching all over and pop up rashes, except now they seem to coincide with flares or possibly something I ate?! I have been a nurse for 37 yrs and this disease is perplexing to say the least. Just when you think you have figured something out, it changes. This last summer I noticed my sun/heat sensitivity has gotten worse, even wearing sunscreen, minimizing exposure, wearing clothing with upf protection, and large hats etc.

If you have a rash, too, Michelle, please have it examined. I find detergent free of additives, mild soap without dyes/perfumes, and cotton clothing help me, along with the other things mentioned above.
