Some spices, yes, cumin, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes but I find any meal with tons of different foods is problematic for my body.🥺

Yes I have experience this also. I put fresh garlic, onions, bell peppers, goya seasoning in a blender and use as seasonings in my food and now I am better.

Have you found that lupus has made you overly sensitive to spices and seasoned foods?

You're not alone in experiencing sensitivity to spicy or heavily seasoned foods. Many MyLupusTeam members report changes in how their body reacts to spices:

- Some describe burning sensations in their mouth or throat
- Others experience instant indigestion from even small amounts of spice
- Some notice their butterfly rash appearing or facial swelling after spicy foods

However, lupus affects everyone differently. Some members continue eating spicy foods without issues, while others who previously loved spicy dishes can no longer tolerate them. What might be causing your sensitivity?

Several possibilities could explain your reaction to Thanksgiving dinner:

1. Heartburn/GERD: Spicy and seasoned foods can irritate the esophagus, which is common in people with lupus. This can cause discomfort and burning sensations.

2. Individual ingredients: Garlic is often used in holiday cooking and may trigger immune system responses in lupus. The reaction might not be to all spices, but specific ingredients.

3. Food sensitivities: While different from allergies, sensitivities can cause digestive symptoms like bloating and nausea, which overlap with lupus gastrointestinal symptoms.

Consider keeping a food journal to track which specific foods trigger your symptoms. This can help you and your doctor identify patterns. You deserve understanding, not shame

It's incredibly difficult when family doesn't understand that lupus doesn't take holidays off. Your body's reaction was real, and you did try.

Setting boundaries around food is important for managing your health. Consider having a calm conversation with your family when emotions aren't running high, explaining that lupus has changed how your body processes certain foods. It's not about not wanting to participate—it's about your body's needs.

Talk to your rheumatologist about your food sensitivities. They can help determine if medication adjustments, dietary changes, or testing might help you manage these reactions better.
