I developed an irritating itch on the scar on my pinky finger from surgery three years ago. It also itches near my ring finger, so I removed my ring for a couple of days. Hydrocortisone cream brings a little relief. Has anyone else experienced this? I looked it up and the information was interesting. I thought it might be helpful to someone else.

Why is your old surgical scar itching?

Itching on or near old scars can happen for several reasons, and it's great that you're exploring what might help. With lupus, itching can be particularly complex since skin inflammation is common.

Here are some possibilities:

- Your lupus itself may be causing skin inflammation in that area
- The ring may have been irritating the skin near the scar
- Dry skin or changes in weather can trigger itching
- Sometimes scars just become itchy without a clear trigger

What might help:

You're already doing the right thing by using hydrocortisone cream and removing your ring temporarily. Some MyLupusTeam members have found relief with prescription-strength steroid creams like clobetasol when over-the-counter options aren't enough.

If the itching persists or worsens, it's worth checking with your doctor. They can determine whether this is related to lupus activity or something else, and may prescribe stronger topical treatments or other medications if needed.

Keep the area moisturized and watch for any changes like increased redness, scaling, or new rashes spreading beyond the scar area.

I keep an aloe vera plant. The gel is very soothing to itching scars.

Kim, I find Aquaphor very soothing for many scars or minor burns. Anyone who hasn't used it should give it a try.

I massaged my hand with castor oil and it relieved the itch longer than I thought it would. Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties. The swelling was down this morning.💜
