What Are the 4 Types of Lupus? Read Article...
A MyLupusTeam Member

Yes, we can get lesions anywhere on my body. I had them on my fingers at the onset of lupus. My dermatologist prescribed me a steroid cream that cleared them up.

I can only say see a dermatologist to check if it is from lupus or if it's something else. I know from experience that subcutaneous lesions resemble certain types of fungal infections. I struggle with subcutaneous lesions. They don't itch or hurt and they aren't open sores but they can look bad. I had them all over my face and neck at one point and it does weigh on your self confidence. If it is something that bothers you, you can always look into a type of swimsuit that covers the areas you don't want to show?
I have gotten to the point where I don't care if people stare. Once the lesions heal, sometimes they can leave scarring or areas of hyperpigmentation, which is something I deal with. Life's too short to deal with other people's impressions of me. Of course there are occasionally stray comments that get to me but I do my best to shut them out. It's a struggle πŸ«‚
As far as treatment goes, I take hydroxychloroquine and have had to take long term Prednisone in the past to get rid of lesions, as well as various prescriptions of cortisone creams and lotions. And always use sunscreen on the affected areas.

Yes, lupus absolutely can cause lesions on the back and legs β€” you are not alone in this. Many MyLupusTeam members deal with the same frustration, and the impact on confidence and daily life is very real. One MyLupusTeam member shared, "Because of the skin lesions, people stare at you... It not only takes a toll on your self-esteem, but it's so painful as well."

Two types of cutaneous lupus commonly affect these areas:

- Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE) β€” round, coin-shaped, thick, scaly red patches that can scar and cause skin discoloration
- Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (SCLE) β€” circular red patches with a ring-like, sometimes scaly border Treatment options a dermatologist or rheumatologist may recommend include:

- Steroid creams, injections, or pills to reduce skin inflammation
- Calcineurin inhibitor creams or pills to calm immune responses in the skin
- Antimalarial medications to help protect skin from UV light and reduce rashes
- Biologics (injected medications made from living cells) for more stubborn lupus skin symptoms

It's important to get a proper diagnosis first β€” a dermatologist may do a skin biopsy to confirm what type of lesions they are before starting treatment. While treatment works from the inside out, some everyday things can help manage flare-ups:

- Avoid sun and UV exposure, including fluorescent indoor lighting
- Use gentle, non-irritating skin and body care products
- Try cool baths, sometimes with oatmeal, to soothe itching and discomfort
- Avoid smoking, which can trigger rashes

The goal is to get those lesions under control so a swimsuit and shorts feel like a choice again β€” not something off the table. Definitely bring this up with your rheumatologist or ask for a dermatology referral if you haven't already. πŸ’™
