A MyLupusTeam Member asked a question 💭
Huntersville, NC

I had a really strange and scary moment today and I wanted to ask if anyone here has experienced something similar.

I had a weird headache (specifically on both sides of my head), felt confused while working (I kept typing the same word repeatedly without realizing), and then I collapsed after a couple of minutes of light activity with my dog. I was short of breath and super fatigued afterward.

I’m feeling stable now and resting with support, but I wanted to reach out and see if this is something… read more

Has anyone else experienced confusion, collapsing, and extreme fatigue during a lupus flare?

What you experienced sounds really frightening, and it's good that you're resting and have support. Yes, MyLupusTeam members have shared similar experiences, and what you describe could be related to lupus.

The confusion and repetitive typing you experienced are symptoms consistent with brain fog, which can occur during lupus flares. Brain fog can cause poor concentration, trouble processing information, and difficulty with tasks you normally do easily.

The collapsing is more concerning. Some people with lupus experience fainting and dizziness, which can be linked to:

* Problems with blood pressure
* Anemia (low red blood cells)
* Changes in the nervous system
* In rare cases, seizures related to neuropsychiatric lupus

Some seizures are subtle and may appear as brief confusion or staring spells rather than the more obvious shaking and collapsing.

Please contact your doctor right away to report this episode. While you're feeling stable now, collapsing and the combination of symptoms you experienced need to be evaluated promptly. Your doctor can determine if this was part of a flare and whether any testing is needed.

MyLupusTeam members have noted that symptoms like confusion, extreme fatigue, and other neurological issues often worsen during flares, so tracking these patterns can help your healthcare team.

@A MyLupusTeam Member Thank you so much for sharing this with me — it really means a lot. I’m so sorry you went through all of that, and I’m glad you finally found a doctor who listened and gave you answers after so many years. That must have been such a long and painful road.

@A MyLupusTeam Member Thank you so much! I didn’t go to the ER because the symptoms stopped afterward, but after reading your messages, I realize I should take this more seriously. I’m going to reach out to my doctor and explain exactly what happened.

I really appreciate you mentioning the seizure connection too — I didn’t know lupus could show up that way. I’m going to keep notes of everything I remember in case it helps my doctor figure things out.

Thank you both again for taking the time to respond! Sending you so much love and strength ❤️

Did you go to the ER for evaluation? If this occurs again, please do so, and try to be seen by your doctor as soon as possible! I agree that it's likely this was a seizure, dcame.

This sounds a lot like when I first started having seizures. The small ones are exactly what you just described. Almost like an out of body feeling and then a huge gap in time.As my disease progressed I started having grand- mal seizures at the time I wasn’t informed I had lupus this is a new diagnosis for me although I’ve had dr’s tell me I had some kind of immune disorder. The Lack of funds l had made it difficult to follow up with a dr. No dr wanted to take me on with out insurance and I made to much money between my 3 min wage jobs to get help. Now 30 yrs later im just starting to put the pieces together and recently saw a rheumatologist who has diagnosed me with sle as I read about this disease I see links between seizures and lupus you may want to inform your dr of your experience record what you remember and definitely let your dr know
