Elevated at rheumatology bloodwork. Around 130 and it should be 34 or below. So I get a thyroid panel done at Dr office an d it is always within normal range but I don’t stop taking the biotin before bloodwork. Didn’t know until recently that I should. I have some symptoms that could be attributed to thyroid problems including very dry skin, depression, constipation, neuropathy. Does biotin really skew the results?

TPO is thyroid peroxidase antibodies, which are linked to autoimmune thyroid disease. Large amounts of biotin can interfere with thyroid hormone and thyroglobulin (a protein that binds thyroid hormone) test results.

Incidentally, biotin is not proven to help hair and nails, though some dermatologists suggest trying it.

I always have to stop taking biotin when I have bloodwork for a week that includes a multivitamin. It can really negatively affect bloodwork.

Thank you for the info Frankie, I was clueless! I've been taking advanced hair skin and nails for 2 yrs now.It contains biotin, hyaluronic acid and amla extract(whatever that is). I don't know what TPO stands for, but my bloodwork results have been bad. My rheumy appt. is tomorrow so perfect timing, it's going on my list now. Again, thank you, you're awesome!💜

Does biotin really affect blood test results?

Yes, biotin can significantly distort certain lab results, making it difficult for healthcare providers to accurately assess your health. High doses of biotin can skew thyroid function tests and labs used to check for certain heart conditions.

The dose you're taking (20,000 mcg daily) is quite high - about 667 times the adequate daily intake of 30 mcg for most adults. While biotin itself is considered safe even at high doses, this amount could definitely be interfering with your test accuracy.

Your situation with the elevated TPO at rheumatology but normal thyroid panel at your doctor's office could be related to the biotin interference, especially since you're continuing to take it before testing.

Here's what you should do:

* Stop taking biotin at least 72 hours (3 days) before any blood work
* Let all your healthcare providers know about your biotin supplementation
* Discuss retesting your thyroid panel after stopping biotin temporarily
* Talk to your doctor about your symptoms (dry skin, depression, constipation, neuropathy) to determine if they're thyroid-related or from another cause

The symptoms you're experiencing could have multiple causes beyond thyroid issues, so it's important to get accurate test results first.
