Have you experienced a bad cramp in your ankle at night, followed by bruising and swelling that's spreading?

This situation needs immediate medical attention. While lupus can cause painful leg cramps and muscle spasms, the combination of sudden pain, spreading bruising, and swelling in your ankle could indicate something more serious that requires urgent evaluation.

Leg cramps with lupus are typically described as intense muscle spasms that can be excruciating, and they often occur at night. A MyLupusTeam member shared experiencing terrible "jump-out-of-bed-and-stretch cramps" in the middle of the night.

However, a cramp alone wouldn't typically cause bruising that spreads and swelling. Bruising happens when small blood vessels beneath the skin break, allowing blood to pool under the surface. The spreading nature of your bruise and the swelling are concerning signs. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden pain with swelling or skin changes, especially if it's on one side. This could be a sign of a blood clot or another condition requiring prompt treatment.

Contact your doctor or go to the ER right away. Don't wait to see if it improves on its own. Your healthcare provider can perform tests to determine what's causing these symptoms and provide appropriate treatment.

Teresa, as it's a large bruise, I suggest you see your doctor about this. This, along with the associated ankle swelling, could indicate a flare, and it's best to be checked.

I once had a sudden pain followed by a bruise on my thigh when I was in a flare.

Ideally, a BP of 120/80 or less is best, but up to 130 for the top (systolic) isn't bad. Are you avoiding salt, Teresa? For those who are overweight or obese, even a little weight loss lowers the BP, too, as does exercise like walking, if possible. I'm sure you'll follow up with your doctor about it. Pain can definitely raise it, too.
