My mother had that. She said it was from doing so much cleaning. I didn't believe her, but okay. I haven't gotten it yet.

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes patches of skin to lose their pigment or color, resulting in lighter or white spots. It occurs when melanocytes (the cells that produce skin color) are destroyed or stop functioning.

While vitiligo itself isn't directly caused by lupus, people with lupus may be at higher risk for developing it since both are autoimmune conditions. In autoimmune diseases, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in the body.

If you're noticing changes in your skin pigmentation, it's important to discuss this with your rheumatologist or dermatologist. They can properly diagnose whether it's vitiligo or another lupus-related skin manifestation, and recommend appropriate treatment options.

Keep in mind that lupus can cause various skin symptoms, so any new skin changes should be evaluated by your healthcare team to ensure you're getting the right care.
