Can lupus cause muscle weakness and difficulty standing up from sitting or kneeling positions?

Yes, lupus can cause muscle weakness that makes it difficult to stand up from sitting or kneeling positions. This happens through a condition called myositis, which is inflammation of the muscles.

Myositis most commonly affects:
- The legs
- Upper arms
- Shoulders

Muscle weakness is the most common symptom of myositis. When the leg and hip muscles are affected, activities like standing up from a chair or getting up from the floor can become challenging.

Additionally, corticosteroids like prednisone, which are commonly used to treat lupus, can also cause muscle weakness as a side effect. This can further contribute to difficulty with movements that require leg strength.

If you're experiencing unusual muscle pain, soreness, or weakness, it's important to talk to your rheumatologist right away. They can help determine if myositis or medication side effects are causing your symptoms and adjust your treatment accordingly.

It's also worth noting that avoiding the use of muscles due to pain can actually worsen muscle weakness over time, so working with your doctor to keep muscles active is important.

Yes , I feel like I have muscle wasting. My husband opens just about everything for me. Some days it's hard to keep my eyes open or to even take a step due to weakness. I've started taking extra vitamins in powder form and mix it in a shake with some protein that helps some.

They did like a neuropathy test. It’s a tool that shocks parts of your body that the person puts it on. The test did show weakness of muscles
