I have had fevers during lupus flares, but no higher than 102 or so. Have you seen your rheumatologist?

I have been to urgent care, re: fevers, received antibiotics, they know I have lupus. Went to ER in November, no help. Went to ER in December, this Dr was determined to figure this out. CTScan both ER visits, ultrasound at 2nd ER visit, ordered 2nd CTScan. Possible UTI, but I don’t have symptoms. This Dr didn’t give up, he consulted with Urologist on call, she wanted to see me in office. I got an appt. in Jan, now I need tests, appt in March. I still have fevers off and on, no idea why but getting close. Does anybody else get these fevers do they ever find out what they are from, just random infection or inflammation.

Yes, fevers can result from lupus flares, but it's important to be evaluated as soon as possible, as there may be a serious infection causing them as well. It's best to also ensure there's no organ flare accompanying them. Please keep us posted.

Are frequent high fevers a symptom of lupus?

Yes, fever is a common symptom of lupus, but the temperatures you're experiencing need immediate medical attention. While low-grade fevers (below 101°F) are typical with lupus, your fevers reaching 104.5°F are concerning and require urgent evaluation.

Fevers in lupus can signal several things:

* Lupus flare - Research shows up to 60% of fevers in people with lupus are due to disease activity
* Infection - This is especially important to rule out since lupus and its treatments weaken your immune system
* Medication side effects - Corticosteroids and immunosuppressants can increase infection risk
* Other health conditions - Sometimes fever indicates complications like kidney problems or other conditions that can occur with lupus

Important: If you have a fever over 101°F, especially while taking immunosuppressive medications, contact your doctor right away. Fevers at 104.5°F are particularly serious and may require emergency care.

Your rheumatologist needs to determine whether these high fevers are from lupus activity, an infection, or another cause. Don't wait - reach out to your healthcare team today to discuss these temperature spikes.
