My rheumatologist recommended folic acid - 2 tabs, 400mcg- once a day for the mouth ulcers., also with acetyl-l-cysteine 600 mg once a day. This combo has helped me tremendously. If I skip a few days and forget, the ulcers come back.

@A MyLupusTeam Member Good information. I forgot that I was doing this back in the 1990s.

Yes, in my teens, I had fatigue and frequent bouts of very red eyes (probably episcleritis). In hindsight, I'm sure these were early lupus symptoms.

Looking back at symptoms before diagnosis is something many people with lupus do, and mouth ulcers are definitely a common sign that often appears early on.

Mouth ulcers affect between 8 percent and 45 percent of people with lupus. They can show up during flares or even when the disease seems quiet. Some people describe them as similar to canker sores, appearing on the inner cheeks, lips, roof of the mouth, or lower lip.

Many MyLupusTeam members have shared similar experiences of having mouth ulcers before their diagnosis. One member mentioned noticing bumps inside their jaw and red bumps on their tongue, along with sores in the corners of their mouth.

Other early symptoms people sometimes recall include:
- Skin sensitivity or rashes
- Joint pain or muscle aches
- Unexplained fatigue
- Butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks

If you're connecting the dots between past symptoms and your recent diagnosis, it might be helpful to keep a symptom journal now. This can help you and your doctor track patterns and manage your condition more effectively going forward.
