Teresa, you raise a good point. When we have a headache, we should check our blood pressure and make sure it's okay. It may be a little elevated due to pain, but anything over 180/110 or so should be discussed with our doctors immediately! An urgent care visit would be reasonable, too.

Migraine is what actually led to my lupus diagnosis. That Migraine lasted a year. Yes, a full year of Migraine misery. I stay on ajovy, receive botox treatment, take ubrelvy, magnesium, Tylenol when needed, anti nausea medication.
Most of the time I do well, but did have a bad Migraine last week, that flat laid me out.
I almost always get a migraine if my lupus flares.

I had horrific migrain headaches and went to the ER several times. They hooked up an EKG and finally figured out they were the result of an irregular heartbeat. I would get them to check it to rule it in or out as they put me on 25 mg of Topamax which ended the migraines due to my heart issue. I take it twice a day 12 hours apart. Hugs and prayers.

Could your migraine be related to lupus affecting your brain?

Yes, migraines can be connected to lupus. About 54 percent of people with lupus experience headaches, with migraine being the most common type. Lupus can cause inflammation in the brain, sometimes called "lupus cerebritis," which may contribute to migraine attacks and other neurological symptoms.

When lupus affects the nervous system, it can cause various symptoms including:
- Migraine headaches
- Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
- Seizures
- Dizziness

The inflammation happens when your immune system attacks your nervous system, similar to how it causes rashes when it attacks your skin. What should you do about it?

The most important step is to talk with your rheumatologist about your migraines. They can determine if testing is needed and help you find the right treatment approach.

Managing lupus-related migraines typically involves:
- Treating the underlying lupus inflammation with medications like corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs
- Identifying and avoiding your personal migraine triggers (stress, certain foods, weather changes, fatigue)
- Considering specific migraine treatments if needed

Many MyLupusTeam members have found relief by working with their healthcare team to address both their lupus and migraine symptoms together.

@A MyLupusTeam Member, Thankyou, I was hoping i would get up this morning without this migraine but no such luck, its been 13 days now, & I have my MRI this morning, of my right scapula to see if the spot that is growing that they saw is cancer or not, im hoping its not, but cant figure out what else it can be. I think ill csll my primary Dr. after my MRI today to see if she can see me, im been trying to get in to see my Rheumatologist but she in maturity leave for the next 3 months, i tried to see if i could see someone else or switch to another Dr. they havent gotten back weather they will allow it or not. Its been a couple weeks now that i spoke to them . They didnt care that i thought I was in a flair, i last saw my Rheumatologist around the beginning of july.
