I treat the symptoms with
1. Ice or heating pads or alternate the two
2. Topical. I like the ones with lidocaine in them they seem to last the longest
3. Warm soaks in a hot tub or regular tub if possible.
4. Stay hydrated . I know it sounds kooky but getting enough water seems to help
5. And lastly, gentle gentle exercise. It can be as simple as pt exercises, treadmills or recumbent bikes. Go slow and stretch before you work out to warm up your joints.
I hope that helps. Winter is always a challenge here in Ohio. Stay warm and be well. Xoxo

How can you manage severe right leg joint pain during cold winter weather?

Cold weather can definitely make lupus joint pain worse. Many people with lupus find that winter temperatures increase pain sensitivity and can even cause muscle spasms. You're not alone in struggling with this.

Here are some ways to help manage your leg pain and stay warm:

Staying Warm:
- Layer your clothing to help regulate body temperature
- Use heating pads or warm compresses on painful areas
- Keep your home at a comfortable temperature
- Try warm baths or showers to ease stiffness

Pain Relief Options:
- Apply heat therapy using a hot water bottle or warm damp washcloth (microwave for about 20 seconds)
- Some people find electric blankets helpful at night
- Consider supportive aids like braces or canes if mobility is difficult
- Stay active indoors when possible to keep joints moving

When Heat Helps:
Heat can improve flexibility and loosen tight muscles, which may provide relief during cold weather. One MyLupusTeam member keeps their house cool year-round specifically so they can use an electric blanket for joint and back pain, finding the heat very soothing.

If your right leg pain is severe or accompanied by swelling, warmth, tenderness, or discoloration, contact your doctor right away. These could indicate a more serious issue requiring immediate attention.

Your rheumatologist can also help identify the specific cause of your pain and recommend treatments tailored to your needs.
