Has anyone experienced black or brown lines in their fingernails, and could lupus be the cause?

Yes, lupus can cause black or brown lines in your fingernails. This discoloration is called melanonychia, and it may appear purple, brown, or gray depending on your skin tone.

Several MyLupusTeam members have shared similar experiences. One member noticed their fingernails were "turning a dark color near the tips and have developed horizontal ridges."

Why this happens:

Lupus-related nail changes likely occur due to inflammation and how your immune system reacts to the condition. Lupus lesions around the nail fold (where the nail grows from your finger) can be a source of many nail problems, including discoloration.

Additionally, some lupus medications can cause nail discoloration, including:
- Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil)
- Azathioprine
- Methotrexate
- Corticosteroids

It's important to talk with your rheumatologist or dermatologist about this new symptom. They can determine if it's lupus-related or if another cause needs to be ruled out, and recommend appropriate treatment if needed.

Donna, MTX can cause nausea and decreased appetite, pain, diarrhea, and liver inflammation (hepatitis with elevated enzymes). This seems the most likely culprit, though I don't know your precise symptoms. I would discuss it with your doctor.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and hope that he does as well as possible!😘

@A MyLupusTeam Member I have those dark lines on at least 4 nails but never knew what they were till now. Next time I see my rheumatologist I’ll mention it to her. Good night Donna. πŸ’œπŸ˜΄πŸ’œπŸ˜΄πŸ’œ

I have bruises under my middle fingernail and the one next to it on only my left hand. They have been there for at least a yr. The one under my middle finger seems to be growing. Someone once told me (not a doctor) that it is a sign that I have heart problems. I hope that isn't true. 😟
