What diet works best for managing lupus symptoms?

While there's no single "lupus diet" that replaces medical treatment, many healthcare providers recommend an anti-inflammatory eating approach. The Mediterranean diet is particularly popular and well-researched for people with lupus.

Key components of a lupus-friendly diet include:

* Plenty of fruits and vegetables (aim for colorful variety)
* Whole grains for fiber
* Lean proteins like skinless chicken, fish, legumes, and low-fat dairy
* Healthy fats from olive oil, avocados, and nuts
* Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines) rich in omega-3 fatty acids at least twice weekly
* Plenty of water

Foods to limit or avoid:

* Garlic (may strengthen immune system and trigger symptoms)
* Alfalfa sprouts (contain proteins that may promote inflammation)
* Processed and fast foods
* Excessive salt, especially if you have high blood pressure
* Alcohol (can interfere with medications)

Many MyLupusTeam members report that processed foods, red meat, dairy, gluten, and sugar can trigger their symptoms. However, food triggers are highly individualized. One member noted, "Everyone can have different food triggers. It's important to find out what makes you feel better and makes you feel worse."

Consider trying an elimination diet to identify your personal triggers, and always consult your doctor before making major dietary changes.
